What is Medicare

Medicare is a federal health coverage program intended for older people and those with disabilities and kidney problems. You are eligible for coverage if you:

  • Are 65 or older
  • Under 65 and receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSID)
  • Under 65 with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

What are the different parts of Medicare?

Offering a variety of insurance plans, Medicare allows coverage for hospital care, medical care, prescription drugs, and more. All of these benefits are broken into four specific areas—Parts A, B, C, and D:

  • Part A covers hospital stays, short-term stays in hospice and nursing facilities, and some home health care.
  • Part B covers doctors’ visits, various preventative services, outpatient care, and many medical supplies.
  • Part C offers all of the coverage of parts A and B as well as various extra benefits.
  • Part D covers prescription medicine on top of Parts A and B, as well as cost, private-fee-for-service, and medical savings account plans.

What is the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Parts A and B are considered Original Medicare and are offered directly through the federal government upon Medicare enrollment. You may also opt for a Medicare Advantage plan, or Part C, in which you receive various other benefits, as well as the benefits of Part D. It is the “all-in-one” Medicare coverage option.

What is not covered by Medicare Parts A and B? Areas of care that are not included in Original Medicare but included in a Medicare Advantage plan include. but not limited to:

  • Dental care and dentures
  • Eye exams for prescription glasses
  • Acupuncture
  • Hearing aids and related doctor’s exams
  • Routine foot care

There are many added benefits to a Medicare Advantage plan. Without it, you may find yourself in a desperate situation with no insurance to cover your needs. It is sad and dangerous, but it doesn’t have to be.
