Medicare Eligibility

If you are unsure if you are eligible for Medicare, the guidelines are very simple. You are eligible if you:

  • Are 65 and older
  • Are a U.S. citizen
  • You or your spouse worked long enough to earn Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits
  • You or your spouse is/was a government employee
  • Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

You may also be eligible if:

  • You are entitled to or have received Social Security Disability benefits for a total of 24 months
  • You receive disability benefits/pension from the Railroad Retirement Board
  • You have Lou Gehrig’s Disease
  • You have permanent kidney failure

Am I Eligible for medicare part c?

The above are all potential qualifications for Parts A and B, or Original Medicare. The qualifiers for Medicare Part C/Medicare Advantage are a bit different.

You must first be enrolled in Original Medicare. Because Part C is provided by individual companies rather than the federal government, you must also be within the service area of a Medicare Advantage provider. If you meet these expectations, you may choose whether you prefer this “all-in-one” alternative to Original Medicare.

am i eligible for premium-free medicare?

You may be eligible for Medicare Part A premium-free coverage. A premium is a monthly fee that an individual must pay to their insurance plan for continued coverage. You are exempt from this premium if:

  • You worked at least ten years in a job where you paid Social Security taxes
  • Are eligible for Railroad Retirement benefits
  • Your spouse qualifies for premium-free coverage

You will likely pay a premium fee if you do not meet these criteria. Your premium, then, is dependent on the amount of Social Security taxes you paid while working. As of 2020, you will pay:

  • $240: If you or your spouse worked between 7.5 and 10 years paying Social Security taxes
  • $437: If you or your spouse worked less than 7.5 years paying Social Security taxes
  • If you are unable to pay your monthly premium, you may qualify for the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) Program and other benefits
